Beschreibung:

SAINT GAUDENS, AUGUSTUS. 1848-1907. 10 Autograph Letters Signed and Letters Signed ("Augustus Saint Gaudens") to William E. Dodge, and then to Cleveland H. Dodge and Sarah Tappan Hoadley Dodge, regarding the completion of the Sherman Monument in Central Park, 31 pp total, on various papers, January 18, 1903 to January 30, 1905, from Aspet, Windsor, VT, and University Club, NYC, among others, with one transmittal envelope, clean. AN ARCHIVE OF LETTERS FROM THE ARTIST TO THE FINANCIER BEHIND THE SHERMAN MONUMENT. Called the "greatest statue of a commander in existence" by Theodore Roosevelt, the Sherman Monument took Saint Gaudens upwards of 11 years to complete. These letters provide a glimpse into the final mounting on a base by McKim Mead White and the machinations of mounting a large-scale public project. They conclude with discussion of a presentation by Gaudens of a Robert Louis Stevenson bronze to the Dodges in honor of their support.
