SAINT MARTIN, historiated initial "D", on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT MISSAL ON VELLUM [Umbria, Perugia, second half of the 14th century] Leaf 363x245mm, initial 50x60mm, pink ornamented in gold on blue ground with white penwork tracery and coloured leafy extensions. St. Martin riding a white horse handing half his green cloak to a standing beggar, on red ground with white tracery, (halo slightly flaking). Text in two columns, 26 lines, written in brown ink in a large gothic rotunda, rubrics in red, 5 two-and three-line initials with red and purple pen flourishing. Text on verso with 5 large initials. The miniature introduces an Introit for the feast of St.Martin 'Dominus qui conspicis' . The artist of the miniature is probably the principal artist responsible for a Franciscan Missal for the Church of Santa Maria del Verzaro in Perugia. This is described in Antonio Caleca, Miniatura in Umbria I - La Biblioteca Capitolare di Perugia (1969) Ms 8, pp 103-105 and 185, also illustrations 587-603.
