He was strongly influenced by William Blake with whom he formed the group 'The Ancients' with their aim to live close to nature and thereby paint and write in a state of poetic rapture. Palmer's early works were best known for their visionary pastoral scenes: "The Magic Apple Tree" at the Fitzwilliam Museum is his most famous work.
