Samuel Palmer (British, 1805-1881) A Woman with her child in a cornfield pen and ink, heightened with white, on buff paper h:29 w:22 cm Provenance: From the estate of the late Eila Grahame of Claverhouse Exhibited: London, J S Maas & Co Ltd, Spring Exhibition 1963, No 61 Samuel Palmer was a key figure in English Romanticism in the 19th Century. He was strongly influenced by William Blake with whom he formed the group 'The Ancients' with their aim to live close to nature and thereby paint and write in a state of poetic rapture. Palmer's early works were best known for their visionary pastoral scenes: "The Magic Apple Tree" at the Fitzwilliam Museum is his most famous work.
