SAROYAN, William (1908-1981). Three autograph letters signed and five typed letters signed ("Bill" and "Bill Saroyan") to A. C. Spectorsky, New York, San Francisco and London, 18 June 1962-10 August 1966. Together 8 pages, 4to and 8vo, various paper stocks. An interesting correspondence relating to Saroyan's publication in Playboy , many discussing his on-going financial troubles. " In swinging London. I am gambling & losing money--more than $3,000 at the Playboy Club... Perhaps because I don't want to write--can't, or won't. Do you think Playboy might interested in making a deal whereby $20,000 or so would come to me? If the worst came to the worst I could offer a great play called The Girls. This surely sounds both desperate and foolish--and surely is, too; but I let it stand, on the chance that it also make sense." Spectorsky sends a sympathetic response which offers to provide the funds, assuming that Saroyan has $20,000 worth of fiction to sell: "send us some stories we can buy, and then you can use that money for gambling." [ With: ] "The Personal Secretary." Typed manuscript for the story which appeared in Playboy , January 1962. 31 pages, 4to, stapled and laid-in agency folder . With Playboy internal typescript with editorial corrections, two pieces of correspondence and yellow four-book sheets. ORIGINAL TYPESCRIPT WITH CORRECTIONS IN SAROYAN'S HAND AND EDITORIAL CORRECTIONS THROUGHOUT. [ With: ] "A Valentine." Carbon typed manuscript for the story which appeared in Playboy , February 1966. 6½ pages, 4to . With Playboy internal typescript and two yellow four-book sheets. ORIGINAL TYPESCRIPT WITH CORRECTIONS IN SAROYAN'S HAND AND EDITORIAL CORRECTIONS THROUGHOUT. [ With: ] Related carbon, xeroxed and some original correspondence relating to Saroyan's appearances in Playboy , including correspondence from Saroyan's attorney and Playboy editors.
