pencil on paper, c. 1946 11 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches (300 x 225 mm) signed in ink, inscribed 1976 Steinberg was an important New Yorker illustrator, famous for his View of the World from 9th Avenue (1976). Also an accomplished painter, in 1946 he exhibited alongside Gorky, Noguchi, and Motherwell in the groundbreaking Fourteen Americans show at The Museum of Modern Art. A retrospective of his work was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1978.
