Schaeffer Jacob Christian. Fungorum qui in Bavaria et Palatinatu circa Ratisbonam nascuntur icones nativis coloribus expressae. Tomus primus [-quartus et ultimus]. Editio tertia. Ratisbonae: impensis auctoris, 1780. Quattro parti in due volumi in-4° grande (mm 278x220). Carte [52]; [57]; [57]; [42], pagine 132, [8]. Nissen BBI, 1744; Stafleu and Cowan 10476; Volbracht, 1878. Rare and remarkable third edition of one of the earliest and most attractive colour-plate books on fungi. In it Schaeffer succeeded in assembling an enormous variety of fungi from a single region, and was among the first to investigate the fungi of Bavaria in such detail. A Prussian-born botanist, zoologist and theologist, Schaeffer spent most of his working life in Regensburg. Elected to the academies at Uppsala and Berlin, he was also made a Fellow of the Royal Society. His works on plants, insects and birds are notable for the exactitude of the descriptions and for the beauty and accuracy of the images. Nissen BBI 1744; Stafleu and Cowan 10476; Volbracht, 1878. Four parts in two volumes. Big 4° (278x220 mm). [52]; [57]; [57] leaves; [42], 132, [8] pages. With 330 contemporary colored plates and two red printed frontispieces. Engraved vignetted in red on the title page of the fourth part. Light browning and waterstains. Contemporary leather, frame with triple fillet and floral decorations on the covers, gilt titles on double littering piece on the spines, gilt edges, marbled flyleaves, repairs on the head-cups.
