SCHEDEL, Hartmann (1440-1514). Liber chronicarum . Augsburg: Johann Schönsperger, 1 February 1497. Chancery 2° (298 x 198mm). Collation: 3s6 4s8 a 6 b-e 4 f-g 6 h 4 i 6 k 2 l 4 m 6 n 8 o-p 6 q 4 r-v 6 x 4 y-z 6 A-Z AA-MM 6 NN 4 OO 6 PP 2 ( title to register, register, 4v-8 blank, a1r title, a1v prologue, a2v full-page woodcut, a3r text, OO5r colophon, OO5v-6 blank). 364 (of 366, without blanks 4 and OO6) leaves, the register is bound at the end, preceded by the 2-page map of Germany. 51 lines and headline, double column. Type: 5:300G (title), 4:150G (headlines and headings), 9:87G (text). Woodcut black lombard capitals, one Maiblumen initial, profusely illustrated with one full-page woodcut, woodcut city views, portraits, and scenes, 2 xylographic title-pages, plus a 2-page map of Germany (trimmed at edges, tears repaired in pen facsimile, right-hand half mounted). (Some small tears, one extending into text on g6 repaired, a few fore-edges of register mended.) 18th-century English tree calf, red leather spine label (very slightly worn at extremities). Provenance: very few early marginal notes; Bute bookplate. First edition in Latin printed by Schönsperger, which follows by one year his German edition. Schönsperger abbreviated Schedel's original text of this 15th-century best-seller, simplified the lay-out, and reduced the size of the book and the woodcuts to produce an edition which was more manageable -- and marketable -- than Koberger's grand Imperial folio volumes. The map of Germany with place-names in Latin is present here. Because it lacks in many copies and is the same block as that used for Schönsperger's German edition of 1500 (with place-names in German), it was probably produced for this edition slightly later, about 1500. (See K. Kratzsch, "Hartmann Schedel und seine Weltchronik", Marginalien 1993, pp.64-80.) HCR 14509; BMC II, 370 (IB. 6361); Goff S-308; Polain(B) 3470; Schreiber 5204; IDL 4061; IGI 8829; CIBN S-162
