SCHMIDHAMER, JOHANN CHRISTOPH engraver and publisher . Neue Arth Blumen Die so wohl zum Laquiren, Sticken, und Nehen, alss auch auf Porcelan zu Mahlen sind, entworffen von Caspar Neuner. Nuremberg: J.C.Schmidhamer, [circa 1740?]. 13 sections in one volume, tall oblong 4to, 183 x 305mm., modern morocco-backed cloth box, later boards, worn, first section title repaired at inner margin, creased and lightly rust-stained. Engraved throughout, 65 plates, the first incorporating a title, all by or published by Schmidhamer (including 48 of flowers, 10 of these after J.D.Preisler, 6 after G.M.Preisler). An interesting (largely floral) selection from a much larger canon of work. The various sections are numbered erratically (97, 109, 69, 165, 12, 62, 100, 169, 13, 78, 21, 48 and 30) and contain between 1 and 6 plates. Those with less than 6 plates should possibly be considered incomplete? The plates within each section conform to a single theme: section 62 is made up from 6 fine plates of cut flowers in a vase, section 78: 6 plates of small bunches of flowers tied with ribbon, etc. As the title makes clear, the plates are intended for use as patterns for use by artisans or amateurs working on embroidery, lacquer-work or porcelain painting. A rare ephemeral survival.
