School of Severin Roesen (American, 1815-1872) Fruit Composition with a Tazza of Strawberries Unsigned. Oil on canvas laid on board, 30 x 23 1/2 in. (76.2 x 59.6 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, craquelure, surface imperfections, surface grime. Provenance: Gertrude Brownlee, Missouri, by descent in the family to Garrett Lind, Palm Beach, Florida, until 2003; Menconi & Schoelkopf Fine Art, New York; Private Collection, Washington, D.C., in 2003. N.B. In a letter from Judith Hansen O'Toole, dated December 4, 2003, the scholar noted that this particular composition was a favored one for Roesen for teaching and even training his students. Nearly two dozen examples of varying quality exist. In her opinion, the painting at hand, while attributed to Roesen's studio, exhibits some combination of work by Roesen and some by another hand. A copy of the letter accompanies the lot.
