Four views from the second U.S. suborbital mission depicting the walk out, insertion of the pilot, Gus Grissom, into his 'Liberty Bell' capsule, the lift off and the unsuccessful recovery of the spacecraft Mercury-Redstone 4, 21 July 1961 Four vintage gelatin silver prints on fibre-based paper, 25.3 x 20.5 cm (10 x 8 in), three with NASA captions on verso and one with press stamp and caption from The Daily Telegraph, dated 20 July 1961 Provenance: from Tim Furniss collection Footnotes: Following the 15 minute and 30 second sub-orbital flight, Grissom splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. The hatch of his 'Liberty Bell' capsule blew prematurely, causing the capsule to start sinking with Grissom inside it. Grissom managed to get out and swim away, but the capsule was not recovered until 1999 Condition Report: Light handling creases, the press print bears a couple of minor surface abrasions, overall good Condition Report Disclaimer
