Sefer Mishmerot Kehuna – Essays, Parables, ethics, rulings, and rules of the Talmud, in alphabetical order, by Rabbi Chiya HaCohen di Larra. Amsterdam, 1753. Only edition. With approabations of Rabbi Yitzchak Chaim Dena and Dena di Brito, Rabbi of Sephardic community of Amsterdam. Handwritten inscription and signature of the author on leaf [3], under "author's apology". Additional signature on title-page. While the book was being published, the author was sharply criticized due to certain things which he wrote, for example, on leaf 11b, regarding the learning methods of "Southern" and Ashkenazi scholars, that "they are wasting their life on the empty pursuit of trying to understand the reason Rashi chose a certain explanation… and the sages of Ashkenaz cause disputes…" As the book was being printed, the author was forced to add "apology for improper words in this book"; this apology is printed on verso of title-page. [4], 84 leaves, 25 cm. Very good condition. Thick paper with wide margins. Single moth hole on leaf 35. Stains. Light tears on margins of first pages.Original cover.
