SENEX, John, London A New & Correct GLOBE of the Earth By J. Senex F.R.S. [c.1745] A rare 2¾-inch (7cm.) diameter terrestrial pocket globe made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes, the equatorial graduated in degrees, the Meridian of London ungraduated, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac, the oceans with numerous arrows for trade winds and monsoons, some with the names of months, further showing the track of Anson's Voyage and the Antipodes to London , Antarctica labelled Incognita , the continents shaded with nation states coloured in outline, Great Britain, Asia, Australia, Madagascar, north-eastern America and South America in red, Europe and the central part of North America in green, eastern North America and Central America in yellow, showing cities, rivers and mountains in pictorial relief, Australia labelled New Holland and lacking a portion of western coastline, and all of the eastern and south-eastern coastline, the northern coastline connected to New Guinea, New Zealand represented by a stretch of south-eastern coastline, North America lacking the northern coastline and the western coastline north of California and labelled Incognita , with one bent and threaded axis pin at the South Pole ( numerous signs of discolouration and mild abrasions, small areas of varnish loss, the North Pole with two approx.18mm long cracks and one approx.10mm long stretching south ), contained within the original spherical fishskin-covered wooden case, the interior lined with two sets of twelve hand-coloured engraved celestial gores, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac, the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and some objects, the stars to six orders of magnitude according to a table but unlabelled ( no varnish, some rubbing ), the edge painted red and with two brass hooks and eyes See Colour Illustration and Detail
