SIENA 1602 -- Descritione della giostra a Campo Aperto fatta alla Real Presenza de' Serenissimi di Toscana . Siena: Florimi, 1602. 4 o (222 x 156 mm). Engraved plate of the joust, engraved vignette and printer's device at end. 19th-century vellum gilt, arms of Prince d'Essling on sides with motto "Victor et Fidelis,"morocco spine label, edges gilt. Provenance : Victor Massena, Prince d'Essling (1836-1910, binding). The very fine plate depicts the joust that took place during the festivities celebrating the visit to Siena of FERDINANDO I DE' MEDICI (1549-1609), Grand Duke of Tuscany. The joust took place on the 9th of June and the text describes in detail the nature of the proceedings. The plate shows the Piazza del Campo, where the Palio horse races are still held to this day. The palazzi signorili that line the square are clearly visible, as is the Torre del Mangia on the left side of the image. Moreni I, 381; Ruggieri 749.
