Title: Signed photograph of Tolstoy, with signed book and small archive Author: Tolstoy, Leo Place: Publisher: Date: circa 1903 Description: Comprises: 5½x3½ original photograph postcard, a half-length portrait of Leo Tolstoy. Signed and inscribed on the recto by Leo Tolstoy, in Cyrillic, dated 1903. * 7¼x5¼ volume from Tolstoy's works. Signed by Tolstoy on the title page. Moscow, 1895. Dsibound. * 4½x6½ original photograph of a house, possibly on the grounds of Yasnaya Polyana, the estate where Tolstoy lived almost until his death. Two items signed by Leo Tolstoy in Cyrillic. The postcard has an inscription for a Shlomo ben Moshe with the surname illegible. In the early 1900's Tolstoy became interested in Hebrew and in Talmudic law. His teacher was a Moscow Rabbi, Solomon Moiseyevich Minor Zalkind, possibly the same Shlomo that is addressed in the inscription. This archive descends from that same Rabbi Zalkind, via his nephew and the nephew's sister-in-law. Lot Amendments Condition: Postcard with large edge chips with some loss to inscription (apparently just a part of the date) and a 1¼ tear into image; volume disbound with creased and frayed edges; photograph of house in a modern mat. Item number: 160119
