Singing Bird Automaton in Gilt-Bronze and Porcelain Cage by Blaise Bontems, c. 1890 Bird with emerald-green and blue plumage, moving head, beak and tail, in domed cage decorated with figures of exotic birds, pendant garlands and flaming-urn finials supported by slender fluted columns, the ormolu base with canted corners, acanthus leaf frieze, floral relief and four inset Sèvres porcelain panels with scenes of courting couples in a bucolic landscape, with going-barrel movement, whistle, bellows, stop/start and volume control levers, ht. 19 x wd. 9 ¾ (48,5 x 25 cm). With size 8 key. Mechanical singing bird cages embellished with porcelain plaques and figures recall the celebrated designs by Pierre Jaquet-Droz of the late 18th century. Bontems' range of deluxe gilt-bronze cages and clocks decorated with Sèvres panels represented the luxury end of the firm's production. A similar cage, illustrated as Model 525 (Cage à pans coupés) in the Bontems catalog of c. 1910, was priced at 340 Francs in comparison to 126 Francs for a cage of the same dimensions on a giltwood base. The factory-fitted volume control is a rare feature, probably only installed to order upon the customer's wishes. – Literature: Peter G. Singvogel-Automat in vergoldeten Käfig mit Porzellanvertäfelung von Blaise Bontems, um 1890 Vogel mit smaragdgrünem und blauen Gefieder, Kopf, Schnabel und Schwanz sind beweglich, in gewölbtem Käfig, geschmückt mit exotischen Vögeln, hängenden Girlanden und lodernden Fackeln, getragen von schlanken kannelierten Säulen, achteckiger vergoldeter Bronze-Sockel mit Fries aus Akanthusblättern, florales Relief, 4 eingesetzte Paneele aus Sèvres-Porzellan, mit Szenen von Liebespaaren in romantischen Landschaften, Sockel mit Federwerkmotor, Mechanik, Balgen und Pfeife, Starthebel und weiterer Hebel zum Einstellen der Lautstärke, Maße 48,5 x 25 cm. Mit Schlüssel Größe 8. Mechanische Vogelkäfige mit Gesang und ausgeschmückt mit Figuren und Porzellantafeln erinnern an die berühmten Entwürfe von Pierre Jaquet-Droz aus dem späten 18. Jahrhundert. Die Palette von Luxus-vergoldeten Bronze-Käfigen und mit Sèvres-Paneelen dekorierten Uhren repräsentieren das Ende der Produktion des Bontems-Unternehmens. Ein ähnlicher Käfig wurde für 340 Franken als Modell 525 (Cage à pans coupés) im Bontems-Katalog von circa 1910 angeboten, im Vergleich dazu kostete ein Käfig mit den gleichen Abmessungen auf einem vergoldeten Holzsockel nur 126 Franken. Der werkseitig eingebaute Lautstärkeregler ist selten, wahrscheinlich wurde er nur auf Wunsch des Kunden installiert. – Literatur: Peter G.
