Provenance : Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), and thence by descent. These articles reflect the world-wide interest in the achievements of the Nimrod expedition. The English and French versions were published almost simultaneously in France, the U.S.A. ( MacClure's Magazine ) and in Britain and the colonies ( Pearson's Magazine ). The first article was published as pages 141-150 of L'Illustration , issue number 3470, and included the unpaginated two-colour map. The second appeared as pages 233-240 of issue number 3475. The illustrations include reproductions of photographs as well as the work of expedition artist George Marston and the professional illustrator Stanley L. Wood. The articles served two main purposes: they went some way towards satisfying the public curiosity about the expedition as well as providing pre-publication publicity for Shackleton's The Heart of the Antarctic published in the winter of 1909.
