Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey R.A (1781 ~ 1841), a sculpted white marble bust of Lady Gertrude Sloane Stanley, portrayed with head to dexter, her hair with ringlets at the forehead and with a plait worn back and held by a clip, with loosely draped decolletage, the waisted circular socle inscribed LADY GERTRUDE SLOANE STANLEY to the front, and F.L.CHANTREY Sculptor 1813 to the reverse, 65cm high, 41cm wide The accompanying receipt from Cyril Humphris reads: "Lady Gertrude was the daughter of the Earl of Carlisle and the daughter-in-law of Hans Sloane-Stanley who commissioned the bust. Chantrey undertook the bust in 1813 and his Ledger entry reads:- P.S HANS SLOANE ESQ. July 16th 1813, Received an order from Hans Sloane Esq., to execute a marble bust of Lady Gertrude Sloane. To: Executing the bust £105.00. May 1813, by Cash £105.00. The bust remained at the Paultons, the house of the Sloane-Stanleys, until it's aquisition by us" Provenance: Cyril Humphris, 23 Old Bond Street, London, 10th January 1980, £3,500 Collection: By descent to Major Roger Cyril Hans Sloane-Stanley Exhibited: Royal Academy 1813
