Woodhouse," pencil signature dated 1858 on front free endpaper); John B. Pearse (inscription on pastedown); W.S. Barrows (inscription dated 1917 on front free endpaper); Y.B.R.A. Red Lodge, Montana (inkstamp on front free endpaper, title, verso of map). FIRST EDITION, JOHN CASSIN'S COPY. A very fine association, inscribed by Dr. John Woodhouse to John Cassin. In 1851, Woodhouse found what is considered to be the first specimen of a sparrow near San Antonio, Texas. He named it Cassin's sparrow in honor of his friend, the great ornithologist who himself is credited with naming some 200 species. Cassin published the important Illustrations of the Birds of California from 1853-1856 and he compiled the volume on Mammalogy and Ornithology which resulted from Charles Wilkes's U.S. Exploring Expedition. Sitgreaves and his party traversed the country from northern New Mexico to San Diego in the summer and fall of 1851, crossing northern Arizona and descending the Colorado to Yuma before crossing the desert. This report is notable for its many lithographed plates of scenes along the route, as well as flora and fauna (and ornithology, perhaps the reason for its appeal to Woodhouse and Cassin). The natural history specimens are described by John Torrey. Wheat calls the map "a monumental achievement... generally correct and exceedingly well done."
