Howells penned this campaign biography while he held the influential post of editor-in-chief of The Atlantic Monthly, before he embarked on his successful career as a novelist. With lithographed portraits of Hayes and his running mate and Vice President William Wheeler BAL 9572. Bookplate (designed by Rockwell Kent and book label of Ralph Pulitzer, eldest son of newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer. Ralph went on to become president of the Press Publishing Company, the group of influential New York City newspapers founded by his father.
