Title: Sketch of the Seminole War, and Sketches during a Campaign. By a Lieutenant, of the Left Wing Author: [Smith, W.W., Major] Place: Charleston [SC] Publisher: Dan. J. Dowling Date: 1836 Description: [ad leaf], iv, [2], 311, [1] pp. 21x12 cm.8¼x4¾"), old mottled calf, spine tooled in gilt, morocco label. First Edition. Scarce account of events in the early stages of the Second Seminole War, with some historical background and natural history of the, an important piece of Floridiana. Includes a vobaculary of the Seminole language. Major Smith, a member of the South Carolina volunteer regiment commanded by Colonel A. H. Brisbane, served in the second war with the Seminoles (1835--42), after the Native Americans, led by Chief Osceola, refused to honor the treaty of Paynes Landing and migrate west of the Mississippi River. We can find only two copies sold at auction since at least 1975. Howes S284; Sabin 81536. Lot Amendments Condition: Binding expertly restored and refurbished; two marginal tears to ad leaf at front with archival repairs; sealing wax with initial N at the top of the title-page and p.[1], some light foxing within, else very good, contents untrimmed.
