EXTREMELY RARE : only two copies of this cartographic broadside can be traced in institutions, both at the British Library. Under the lower map appears the text: 'G. Smith in hanc tabulam Geographicam universalem apud Eboracum reduxit August 12 1735'. This suggests Smith is claiming priority for his work back to 1735, although according to an advert in the Gentleman's Magazine of January 1737 (vol. VII), the broadside is 'Just published' and 'This is the Map . promised in the Magazine for October last [i.e. 1736]'. It is possible that Smith was defending himself from rival claims to priority by pre-dating this map. Wellcome holds an advertisement broadside for this publication which is undated.
