Amongst the earliest published photographs of the Holy City, by one of its leading photographers and one of the first non-Arab photographers of the Hijaz. With the assistance of his Muslim assistant Abu Bakar, Snouck Hurgronje describes the holy city's early history, the traditions of the first Islamic communities, as well as contemporary daily life. His important photographs document the area before Western modernization, recording 'pilgrims from all over the Islamic world, in addition to the sharif of Makkah, the Turkish governor, and various religious and secular figures' (Badr el-Hage, p.46).
