SOLAIA The Antinori family has enjoyed over six hundred years of winemaking in Tuscany, giving Solaia the distinction of being a super Tuscan of fine lineage. Throughout its history, the Antinori family tradition has been steeped in wine beginning with Giovanni di Piero Antinori's registration with the Guild of Winemakers in 1385. Today descendant Marchese Piero Antinori's winemaking ethos governs the wines and though he has not forgotten his ancestry, he claims, "ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation". Antinori began bottling the single vineyard Solaia meaning "sunny one" from a 10 hectare vineyard contiguous to Tignanello in 1978. Initially the blend consisted of 80 Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 Cabernet Franc and today includes a small proportion of Sangiovese. Together with the much-marveled Sassicaia, Solaia proved to the world the prowess of Cabernet Sauvignon in Tuscany. Solaia--Vintage 1985 Tuscany Lot 356 levels: eight bottom neck or better, two top and two upper shoulder. Lot 357 levels: bottom neck or better; lightly bin soiled labels "Deep, velvety; attractive, citrus-like fruit; silky, leathery tannin, very complete. Fine Wine. At Stephen Kaplan's '85 vintage dinner, Chicago, April 2000 ****" MB, Vintage Wine 1 dozen bottles per lot
