SOLOMON, Saul, & Co. (publishers). The Progress of His Royal Highness Prince Alfred Ernest Albert through the Cape Colony, British Kaffraria, the Orange Free State, and Port Natal, in the year 1860. Cape Town: Saul Solomon & Co., 1861. 4° (275 x 215mm). Title, and dedication printed in black on a cream ground within gilt decorative borders. Additional title in blue with mounted circular photograph, all within decorative border in gilt, red and purple, 16 mounted photograph plates by F.York and Kirkman (5 after Thomas William Bowler 5 after Thomas Baines 6 from life), 9 wood-engraved illustrations, 2 printed in two colours. (Some spotting, affecting about five plates.) Original blue cloth, upper cover blocked in gilt and blind, lower cover in blind, spine in gilt (recased, inner hinges repaired). Provenance : Charles Gray (inscription noting the gift of the book in 1938). RARE. Prince Alfred (1844-1900), Queen Victoria's second son, joined the Navy in 1858 and served aboard the frigate HMS 'Euryalus', under the command of Captain Tarleton. The 'Euryalus' made a cruise to the Mediterranean, then Cape Town (where the events recorded in the present album took place) and finally to the West Indies before returning to Britain in August 1861.
