Lot of 14 quarter and sixth plate daguerreotypes of southern gentlemen, many taken by identified photographers from Alabama, Louisiana, and South Carolina, including: Sixth plate of a mustachioed gentleman wearing a pinkie ring, credited on pad to Moissenet & Law, New Orleans, Louisiana. The consignor relates that this image was featured in Ken Burns' documentary series, Jazz, as well as the companion volume, Jazz: A History of America's Music (p. 6). Burns refers to the subject as a Creole from New Orleans. (See first image in listing, top right daguerreotype.) Quarter plate of two young men with facial hair, credited on brass mat to E. Jacobs, New Orleans, Louisiana. Quarter plate of a bearded man with a slightly unevenly tied cravat, credited on velvet pad to Moissenet & Law, New Orleans, Louisiana. Quarter plate of a smug-looking fellow, credited on mat to E. Jacobs, New Orleans, Louisiana. Sixth plate of a man with a narrow face and cleft chin, credited on mat to C. Barnes, Mobile, Alabama. Sixth plate of a bearded gentleman with a deep side part and gold watch chain, credited on pad to Glen, Charleston, South Carolina. Sixth plate of a stylish man with a goatee, wearing a patterned vest, striped tie, and pinkie ring, credited on pad to F. Moissenet, New Orleans, Louisiana. Sixth plate of a clean shaven fellow with a supercilious air, credited on pad to F. Moissenet, New Orleans, Louisiana. Sixth plate of a bearded man, credited to Moissenet & Law, New Orleans, Louisiana. Sixth plate of a young man identified as "Linus Parker," a New Orleans transplant from New York, taken in 1849. Sixth plate a handsome man with carefully styled hair, with inscription behind image reading, "taken in / 1854 in Haskin Ohio / Jean de Bienville / né en Nouvelle Orléans." Housed in a "Rare" octagonal velvet case with brass plate inscribed, "Souvenir," as catalogued in Berg [6-12a-1]. Provenance:Eugene R. Groves Collection of 19th Century Photography Condition: Several with spotting and tarnish. Many cases fully separated at spines.
