Property from a Distinguished Belgian Private CollectionSOUTHERN NETHERLANDISH, ANTWERP, CIRCA 1520RELIEF WITH MOURNERS FROM A CRUCIFIXION oak, on a later wood basemarked with the Antwerp 'hand'relief: 36 by 41.5cm., 14⅛ by 16⅜in.overall: 41 by 49cm., 16⅛ by 19¼in. Please note: Condition 11 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers (Online Only) is not applicable to this lot. To view the Shipping Calculator, please click hereCondition ReportOverall the condition of the wood is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The relief was carved in sections, and there are vertical joints running through Mary Magdalene's face, her proper right shoulder, the Virgin's proper left wrist, and the section below; these joints are slightly open but stable. There are a few smaller separately carved sections which are probably original, including at the central mourning figure's headdress, and Magdalene's drapery at her hip. A section of the drapery between Magdalene's headdress and her back is lost. A few further minor losses, including to the Virgin's proper left index finger. There is some evidence of past worming throughout, and in particular around the bottom and below Saint John's proper left arm, and most notably at the back on the right side. There are various hols for mounting at the back. Two modern wood brackets at the back to stabilise the composition. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale. The
