Beschreibung:

Spanish document from the lost colony of Branciforte, in what is now Santa Cruz, California Author: Estudillo, José Maria Place: Villa de Branciforte, Alta California Publisher: Date: 1809-1810 Description: Partially printed document with the remainder in ink manuscript, in various hands. 4 pages, single folded sheet. Engraved armorial coat-of-arms at lower left of first page. Signed by eight individuals, with rubrics, including, at the end, following the place name Villa de Branciforte, that of José María Estudillo, later to serve as Commandant of the Presidio of San Diego. Rare document from California while still under Spanish rule. The text refers to Monterey, a company of Caballeria, the government of the province, and other matters. Of particular interest is the signature at the end of José María Estudillo, following "Entreque oy dia de la fecha al yntexesadoes la cedula con destino a disputas la gracia a la Villa de Branciforte," referring apparently to a scheduled court for hearing grievances and disputes. Villa de Branciforte was the last of only three secular pueblos founded by the Spanish colonial government of Alta California. The pueblo was established in 1797 on the eastern bluff of the San Lorenzo River, facing Mission Santa Cruz on the west side of the river. The pueblo never prospered, and the area was annexed into the city of Santa Cruz, California in 1905. Villa de Branciforte was founded under the direction of California Governor Diego de Borica in memory of a Viceroy of New Spain, Miguel de la Grúa Talamanca, 1st Marquis of Branciforte, and was founded as part of Spain's strategy to protect upper California against other European countries such as Russia, England, and France. Its original civilian population was not bound to the church or the military. Unlike the Spanish missions, the villa was secular. Documents from, or relating to, Branciforte are very rare. Lot Amendments Condition: Some foxing, minor staining and discoloration, repairs along some of the old folds; very good. Item number: 324466
