Considered by many to be Spillane’s most ambitious work, The Erection Set takes the author somewhat out of his milieu. Set in a small New England industrial town, the story features a leading character, Dog Kelly, who shares many of the tough guy traits of Mike Hammer and Tiger Mann, but who is as interested in understanding his family and his past as he is in punishing the wicked. Additionally, Spillane incorporates multiple voices in the narrative, a change from the standard first-person narrative of the Hammer and Tiger Mann series. See illustration.
