THE ERECTION SET. 1. Typed Manuscript Signed (“Mickey Spillane”) and Inscribed, 205 pp, 4to, Murrell’s Inslet, SC, March 23, 1972, on yellow typing paper, being the original single-spaced draft of The Erection Set, inscribed on the title page, “To Sid—my favorite garbage collector-- / Get this junk outta here! / Mickey Spillane,” with annotations by Spillane throughout the text, leaves with mild toning and thumbing. 2. Typed Manuscript with Annotations, 355 pp, 4to, n.p., [1972], being a double-spaced copy of The Erection Set, additionally annotated by Dutton editors, with typesetter’s stamp, in mailing box from publisher, some thumbing throughout. 3. Typed Manuscript, 372 pp, 4to, n.p., [1972], being an additional clean copy of The Erection Set, in original mailing carton from E.P. Dutton. 4. Galley proof, 122 leaves, November 3, 1971, some darkening and chipping throughout. 5. Page proofs, 122 pp, 1972, spiral bound in blue wraps. Considered by many to be Spillane’s most ambitious work, The Erection Set takes the author somewhat out of his milieu. Set in a small New England industrial town, the story features a leading character, Dog Kelly, who shares many of the tough guy traits of Mike Hammer and Tiger Mann, but who is as interested in understanding his family and his past as he is in punishing the wicked. Additionally, Spillane incorporates multiple voices in the narrative, a change from the standard first-person narrative of the Hammer and Tiger Mann series. See illustration.
