Property from the Sporting and Travel Library of Arnold "Jake" Johnson [SPORTING] The American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine. Baltimore: J.S. Skinner, 1830-1838; New York: Spirit of the Times, 1839-1843 15 volumes, 8vo (8 5/8 x 5 1/4 in.; 220 x 134 mm). Woodcut and engraved title-pages, woodcut and engraved plates; some foxing and offsetting, a few closed marginal tears. Contemporary full and half calf, many original printed wrappers bound in, "J. W. Ware" or "Ware" stamped on the backstrip of each volume (with the exception of Vol. X); Vols. III and IV rebacked, Vols. V-VIII upper joints weak but holding (VI nearly detached), joints of X reinforced. overall rubbed with some loss to calf. A complete set of the oldest and most important of American sporting magazines, "Of complete sets...I know but three..." Ernest R.
