Date: August 16, 1954 Description: 144 pp. Numerous illustrations, many in color; fold-out sheet of 27 color baseball cards. 8¼x11½", original illustrated stapled wraps. Two subscription insert cards still present. First Issue - Volume 1, Number 1. This copy is in what appears to be a publisher's presentation binding of sorts, full blue cloth with repeating 'SI' logo pattern on front. Added to the binding are a pair of conjugate leaves protecting the original wrappers, on the leaf at the front is printed a quote from a letter to prospective subscribers by publisher Henry R. Luce. This copy, though not marked as such, was once in the library of golfing great Walter Hagen. A letter from a Hagen family friend explaining the provenance is laid in. Of the nearly 20 copies of this first issue appearing in recent auction records, we can locate no other copies in this cloth binding. Scarce and with distinguished provenance.
