ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA, historiated initial "I" on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIR BOOK ON VELLUM [Padua, or Ferrara?, second half of the 15th century] Leaf 567x405mm, initial 117x130mm. Saint Anthony in the robe of a Franciscan, holding a martyr's palmbranch and in his other hand a book, in a hilly green landscape of enclosed fields, an ass kneeling in the background. A Franciscan friar is kneeling in prayer before him, between them a purple palmstem with green foliage. Within a border of burnished gold, with long leafy gold, green and purple extensions. Verso of a leaf, 12 lines of text in black ink in a gothic rotunda, rubrics in red, and 3 lines of music below in square notation on red four-line staves. 22 lines of text in red and black on recto. The leaf has the original foliation XXVII. The miniature illustrates the Introit to the Mass of St.Anthony of Padua (13 June) ' In medio ecclesie aperuit '. Probably from a gradual for use in a Franciscan monastery
