St. Benedict within a large initial, on a leaf from an illuminated Antiphoner, and two other choirbook leaves, all on vellum [fifteenth and early sixteenth century] three leaves, comprising: (a) St. Benedict within a large initial 'S' (opening "Signifer inuictissime sacrae ...", the hymn at Matins for the feast of St. Benedict), holding a crozier and blessing, on a leaf 570mm. by 420mm., the initial in pink, green and blue acanthus-leaves on burnished gold grounds with foliate extensions into margin surrounded by bezants, rubrics in red, double column, main text with 18 lines, small initials in red or blue with ornate contrasting penwork, large initial on verso in gold on coloured grounds heightened with white penwork, fold across middle, north east Italy (perhaps Verona), c.1490; (b) vast leaf from an antiphoner, 620mm. by 445mm., with an extremely elaborately decorated 'D', 180mm. high, (opening "Deus dominus domino meo ...") in variegated blue and red, with concentric circles of scrolling and tessellating vines picked out in red and blue penwork, set on dull-gold grounds, all borders in same with roundels at corners, and enclosing "IHS" within another roundel in bas-de-page, 12 lines of text in large late gothic bookhand, 6 lines of text with music on a 4-line stave on reverse, northern Italy, early sixteenth century; (c) leaf from a choirbook, 530mm. by 310mm., with large initial 'S' in blue enclosing penwork picking out foliage and flowers, floral extensions into margins, 9 lines of text with music on 4-line stave, two small initials with a detailed human face picked out in penwork tracery and touched in coloured wash, folded across middle and trimmed at edges, Germany or Netherlands, fifteenth century; all in good condition
