Engraved folding map by Thomas Kitchin hand-colored in outline, half-title, title-page with engraved vignette, 2pp. list of subscribers at front, 2pp. publisher’s advertisements at end; light offsetting to the map, occasional foxing. Original marbled boards; rebacked, worn at extremities, boards rubbed. First edition in English. "An important work in the history of the northwest coast exploration, which deals largely with the [Aleutian Islands and the] islands of the Bering Sea, discovered by the Promyschleniki Commercial Company on their trading voyages [of 1765-1767] beyond Kamchatka. The work gives information on the people and wildlife of these islands. The map depicts Alaska as an island and shows routes taken by various Russian expeditions" (Hill). Following the forty-page account of the islands is A Narrative of the Singular Adventures of Four Russian Sailors, who were cast away on the desert Island of East-Spitzbergen ... By Mr.P.L. Leroy. In addition Frank S. Streeter, the present copy was owned by Vilhjalmur Stefansson—an Arctic explorer, ethnologist, and once the Director of Polar Studies at Dartmouth University.
