STEVIN, SIMON. Les Oeuvres Mathematiques. Edited by Albert Girard Leyden: Bonaventure and Abraham Elsevier, 1634. Title in red and black with woodcut device, numerous woodcut illustrations. Folio, 354 x 221 mm. (14 x 8¾ in.), contemporary vellum; upper hinge cracked, semi-circular wormtrack affecting fore-margins of first 20 leaves (several with chip resulting), some marginal stains (crossing some running titles), tear on 2t6 repaired (crossing 13 lines of text), lacking final blank and correction leaf to pp. 529 and 532. Brunet V:535. The most complete early edition of Stevin's works, including not only his mathematical research, but also his works on statics and hydrostatics, geography, astronomy and fortifications. Stevins wrote in Flemish, and his work was translated into French and Latin within his lifetime. An octavo edition of Stevin's work on arithmetic, also translated by Girard, was published by the Elseviers at Leiden in 1625.
