STRABO (64/63 B.C. - ca. 21 A.D.). [ Geographia .] Rerum geographicarum libri XVII. Paris: Typis Regiis, 1620. 2 parts in one volume, 2° (339 x 225 mm). Title printed in red and black with engraved vignette of Louis XIII arms, initials, double-column text in Greek and Latin. (QQq3 with minor chip to upper margin affecting a few letters.) Contemporary citron morocco gilt, boards of gilt fillets enclosing a semé of fleurs-de-lys, alternating with the kings crowned monogram, enclosing arms of Louis XIII [variant of Olivier 2493, fer 1], spine in seven compartments, the second with gilt-lettered title, others filled with the same semé , gilt edges (a few small marginal abrasions). Provenance : Louis XIII, King of France (1601-1643, binding); Jesuit College, Paris (inscription on title); Robert Roussel, College de Clermont , Jesuit College of Paris , 1624 (book-prize for eloquence in Greek, inscription on preliminary blank); unidentified stamp (faint ink stamp on title, I2 and last leaf). Enlarged and corrected second edition of Strabo’s Geography with Casaubon’s commentary. Stabo’s text in Greek beside Xylander's Latin translation, and with commentaries by Fédéric Morel and Isaac Casaubon. One of the earliest and most important scientific treatises of historical geography. Together with Ptolemy and Solinus, Strabo's only surviving work, the Geography constituted the first attempt at a unified treatise of geographical knowledge.
