STRAVINSKY, Igor (1882-1971). Le Sacre du Printemps. Tableaux de la Russie Paienne En Deux Parties D'Igor Strawinsky et Nicholas Roerich Reduction pour Piano à Quatre Mains par l'Auteur . Èdition Russe de Musique, Berlin, Moscow, Leipzig & New York, [1913]. 2 o (330 x 270 mm.) [8], 89 [90] pp. Title within a narrow typographic border (repeated on cover), music for piano four hands. Original publisher's paper-backed printed boards. (Slight browning, boards slightly rubbed). Slipcase. Provenance : Sotheby Parke Bernet, 13 October 1970, lot 175. FIRST EDITION. A MARVELOUS ASSOCIATION COPY OF THE RITE OF SPRING, INSCRIBED BY THE COMPOSER TO PIERRE MONTEUX (1875-1964), conductor of the legendary first performance of Le Sacre du Printemps at the Theâtre des Champs-Elysées on 29 May 1913. At the upper corner of the first page of music Stravinsky writes: "Je vous embrasse mon cher Monteux. Je n'oublierai jamais ni la rue Clichy [ sic ] ni le 5 et 26 Avril 1914. Paris 18.V.1914." Flyleaf with presentation inscription (dated the very day of the first performance) from one of the printers: "A Monsieur P. Monteux Chef d'Orchestre de Ballets Russes, Paris, le 29 Mai 1913. Edition russe de musique Nicholas de Strouvé." A rare edition of Stravinsky's revolutionary Sacre du Printemps , a 20th-century cultural watershed whose first performance touched off an unprecedented riot. "The pagans on stage," one critic wrote, "made pagans of the audience." The conductor, Monteux, had a long and distinguished career in France and later, the United States. Between 1911 and 1914 he conducted world premieres of Stravinsky's Petrushka , Claude Debussy's Jeux and Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé . In his later autobiography, Stravinsky recounted the genesis of the work: "I had a fleeting vision...I saw in imagination a solemn pagan rite: sage elders, seated in a circle, watched a young girl dance herself to death. They were sacrificing her to propitiate the god of Spring. Such was the theme...I must confess that this vision made a deep impression on me..."
