This lot represents a mystery: the offer consists of a “twin pair” of unusual and so far unknown prototype 35 mm Summilux-M f/1.4 lenses. Both lenses carry the identical (!) serial number, which does neither correspond with the early “0.00X.” numbering, nor with the later “5.00X.” system for prototype Leica lenses. Another interesting detail is the combination of the “lens made in Canada” engraving on the lens barrel in combination with the “LEICA” maker’s name on the front ring, which, however, still (or again?) uses the German DIN font type for the front ring engraving. In certain ways, the lenses give the impression of dating back to the 1980s, while other aspects of styling are reminiscent of the recent Summarit-M line. As a speculation, the lens serial numbers “C543” might indicate a Canadian formula. Even latest research at the Leica Camera Company could not provide an answer to this – probably because the records of this project remained at Leitz Canada.
