SWEET, Robert (1783-1835). Flora Australasica; or a selection of handsome, or curious plants. Natives of New Holland, and the South Sea Islands . London: James Ridgway, 1827-1828. 8 o (239 x 148 mm). 56 hand-colored engraved plates by S. Watts after E.D. Smith. (A few leaves dampstained or with marginal stains.) Contemporary half calf with marbled boards, spine gilt, edges marbled (covers worn and rubbed, paper torn, lacking top compartment of spine). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with plates watermarked 1826-1827. This fundamental work on Australian botany features plates by Edwin Dalton Smith one of the most renowned botanical artists of the time. Sweet was a prominent promoter of exotic botany, and the drawings were done from live plants grown from seed in London.
