SWINBURNE, ALGERNON CHARLES. 1837-1909.Poems and Ballads. Second Series. London: Spottiswoode and Co. for Chatto and Windus, 1878. 8vo. Tipped-in presentation slip inscribed "From the Author" mounted on an 8vo leaf at front. Brown morocco gilt by Otto Zahn for Toof & Co. (signed with both names and dated 1906 on the front turn-in), elaborate gilt vine decoration, spine with 5 raised bands, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, publishers upper cover and spine cloth bound in at back. Upper cover detached, uniform toning throughout. WITH: Autograph Letter Signed ("AC Swinburne"), to an unnamed "descendant of Admiral Collingwood," apologizing that he is not well enough to receive visitors, 1 p, 8vo, London, February 15, 1908, fold creases. Loosely inserted in book. Provenance: George A. Zabriskie (1868-1954, bookplate with presentation inscription dated 1945). FIRST EDITION, in an Arts & Crafts era binding by Otto Zahn, the German binder who had worked for Zaehnsdorf and eventually became President of Toof & Co. in Memphis, Tennessee.
