A History of the Campaigns of 1780 and 1781, in the Southern Provinces of North America. London: T. Cadell, 1787. vii, [1], 518, [2 ad] pp. With a large engraved folding map and 4 engraved plans, outlines or troop placements hand-colored. 4to (290 x 223 mm). Untrimmed in original boards. Custom chemise and red morocco-backed slipcase. Intermittent toning and some minor spotting, 3" closed stub tear to large map and a short stub tear to final map, edge-wear to boards and the backstrip cracked in a couple of places. FIRST EDITION, IN ORIGINAL CONDITION, OF THE PRIMARY ACCOUNT OF THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGNS IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. The author commanded of a British legion active in the war from May of 1776 through to the Battle of Yorktown. Church notes that notwithstanding Tarleton's self-serving narrative, the work is invaluable for the original documents, mostly copied correspondence, which are reproduced as notes at the end of each chapter and are difficult to find elsewhere. The first map delineates the marches of Lord Cornwallis through the Southern provinces, while the remaining four depict the sieges of Charleston and Yorktown and the battles of Camden and Guildford. Tarleton was notorious as a brutal, hard-riding soldier. Church 1224; Clark I:317; Howes T37; Sabin 94397. Provenance: period armorial bookplate of Lord Grey de Wilton; bookplate of G. Hans Sloane Stanley annotated it was given to "H.H.J." in 1938. Acquisition: purchased from William Reese Company, 2000, $6,000.
