TAYLOR, Bayard (1825-1878). Eldorado, or, Adventures in the Path of Empire: Comprising a Voyage to California, via Panama; Life in San Francisco and Monterey; Pictures of the Gold Region, and Experiences of Mexican Travel . New York: George P. Putnam, 1850. 2 volumes, 8 o (191 x 129 mm). 8 tinted lithographs. (Some spotting.) Original slate-blue blind-stamped cloth (some wear, spines darkened). Provenance : Henry E. Huntington (pencil note on rear endpaper "H.E.H. dup"); Thomas W. Streeter (bookplate; penciled notations on endpapers; his sale part V, Parke Bernet, 23 October 1968, lot 2654; purchased from Edward Eberstadt & Sons, 1947). I have ten days more of such work in the mountains, and then to San Francisco and home. I shan't make as much as I expected, but don't regret coming. I may clear $4000 by the trip... I am disgusted with the process of getting up lectures myself, in mining towns. It's a terribly shabby, nasty business, and humiliates me immensely..."
