TAYLOR, Captain Philip Meadows (1808-1876). Sketches in the Deccan. London: by Richard and John E. Taylor for Charles Tilt, 1837. 2 o (490 x 375 mm). Tinted lithographic title and 19 tinted lithographed plates by William Taylor Edward Morton and George Childs after P.M. Taylor. (Some light mostly marginal staining.) Original half cloth, upper cover blocked in gilt (edges rubbed, some stains and scuffs). FIRST EDITION. A fine series of views of the Deccan, at this time the state of Hyderabad. The suite of plates includes views, scenes and settings of places and buildings at Goa, Arungabad, Tooljapoor, Golcondag, Hyderabad, Ellors, Rozah, and the Tandoor hills, among others. Meadows Taylor arrived in India as a young man to work with a Bombay merchant, but quickly accepted a military commission, serving as administrator of Shorapore and other posts. In a civilian capacity, Taylor was Times correspondent, and he wrote several works of fiction giving "excellent pictures of Indian life" ( DNB ). Abbey Travel 460.
