(Tennessee Laws)Laws of the State of Tennessee. Knoxville: George Roulstone, 1803 8vo (201 x 120 mm). Bar Association stamp removed from title, first ten text pages mispaginated by printer, browning and foxing, a few marginal chips, tear to Hh3 repaired. Bound to style in full mottled calf, covers gilt-ruled , spine with raised bands in six compartments, gilt-lettered label to second; endleaves renewed. First edition thus — a Tennessee rarity with remarkable provenance. Laws of the State of Tennessee is generally considered to be the first book printed in the state. Published as an independent venture by its pioneer printer, George Roulstone, the text covers the acts of the territorial and state assemblies. John H. Eaton, to whom this book belonged, was an attorney, member of the Tennessee Legislature, Andrew Jackson's first biographer, a member of the U.S. Senate (1818-1829), and Jackson's Secretary of War.
