Drawn during MacSwineys term as Lord Mayor of Cork, about three months before his imprisonment for possessing a British code cipher, and almost exactly five months before his death on the 74th day of his hunger strike. His enormous funeral in Cork is regarded as a turning point in public support for the independence movement and the Irish Volunteers.
