Terrantez--1862 H. M. Borges
1 bottle per lot
Terrantez--1862 H. M. Borges Level: bottom neck; shipped by Avery & Esquinn, Bristol, England, stencilled bottle "Bottles stencilled 'Terrantez HMB 1862 .' This firm, founded in 1877, built up a great collection of old madeira, acquiring this Terrantez from T T de Camara Lomelino. I have been privileged to taste this, for me, greatest of all madeiras, on five occasions, four in the 1980s, one more recently. My description would mirror much of what has appeared in my notes of some earlier vintages, except that this '62 has extra dimensions: warm amber which should be seen either by candlelight or by a window, catching the last rays of sunlight; an almost overwhelming bouquet and flavor, high toned, tangy, scented, power and delicacy magically combined. The most recent bottle, with an 'Esquin Imports' (San Francisco) slip label, probably brought by fellow guest and great connoisseur, Barney Rhodes. Sweeter than some Terrantez, with slight touch of singed caramel and chocolate. Took to air like a fish to water. One of the three top wines at Bill Baker's madeira tasting, April 1994. At best ****** (6 stars!) " MB, Vintage Wine 1 bottle per lot
