Beschreibung:

TETIUS, Hieronymous. Aedes Barberinae ad Quirinalem... descriptae. Rome: Mascardus, 1642. 2° (357 x 238mm). Title with engraved vignette. Engraved additional title, 27 plates, 14 folding, numerous engraved head- and tailpieces, initials and illustrations, including 4 half-page portraits. (Some light browning, light old dampstain to lower outer blank corner of leaves Aa4 to the end, F4 torn and repaired at outer blank margin, one folding plate torn and repaired at inner blank margin.) Contemporary Italian red morocco gilt, covers panelled with fillets and roll-tools, the first panel with large flower-vase corner-pieces, the inner with fan-shaped cornerpieces, with centrally-placed arms surmounted by a Cardinal's hat, the flat spine with a single panel outlined with fillets and roll-tools, containing a single repeated tool, g.e. (small neat repair to foot of spine, light old dampstain to covers, ties lacking). Provenance : unidentified bishop (binding); Ch. Charon (inscription, dated Rome, 9 June 1702); Duplessis (signature). A fine copy of the first edition, probably bound for presentation. The Palazzo Barberini was bought in 1625 by Cardinal Francesco Barberini, and the alterations were more or less completed by 1633 and included a series of frescos by Pietro da Cortona and Andrea Sacchi (illustrated in the present work). The work as a whole was intended 'to celebrate the palace and the magnificent collections of paintings, sculpture and books with which the Barberini family filled it' ( Builders and Humanists , University of St.Thomas, Texas, 1966, p.176). The work employs an unusual, possibly unique, system to indicate where a number of the plates should be bound: an engraved 'clock-face' is printed on the text leaf preceding the plate with the 'hand' pointing to the appropriate number on the dial. The printer author was apparently not happy with the system and it was abandoned about half-way through the work. The required number of plates appears to be uncertain, the lot is therefore sold not subject to return. Cicognara 3463; cf. Berlin Kat. 2662; cf. Brunet V, 765.
