Title: Tex, the Sheriff and his horse "Patches" - original watercolor, being a reduced copy of the original painting by Frank E. Schoonover, presented to San Francisco Mayor James Rolph, Jr. Author: Baker, Ralph H. Place: San Francisco Publisher: Date: 1929 Description: Original watercolor, signed by Ralph H. Baker, with Schoonover's signature copied. 46x27 cm. (18x10¾") plus margins, framed under glass. Excellent watercolor copy of the painting by the noted American artist and illustrator. Glued to the back of the frame is a letter of presentation to James Rolph, Jr, Mayor of San Francisco, from Captain Charles F. Skelly, Secretary of the Police Commission of San Francisco, " I am forwarding herewith a copy of the picture 'Tex' the Sheriff and his horse 'Patches' which has been reproduced by Mr. Charles F. Taung of the Traung Label and Lithograph Co., and which is being presented to you with our compliments." On the letter, beneath the body of the text, is typed a copy of Rolph's reply, thanking Skelly for the gift. Beneath the letter is written on the back of the frame: "This is a copy of a 36" x 27" oil on canvas for Colt Firearms Corp. poster 1926." Ralph Baker (1908-1976), artist of this watercolor, began working for the Traung Label and Lithograph Co. around 1928 as both a painter and lithographer. This watercolor, from which Traung made their lithographic copies, would have been one of his early efforts in a long and notable career.
