[1847-48], showing a young woman standing in front of a fireplace, and seated on a sofa, lost in thought, in pencil on one leaf, oblong 8vo (light yellowing and traces of adhesive on verso); in a red morocco backed slipcase. Provenance : A. Edward Norton (bookplate) -- purchased from Newton Sale, 30 October 1941, lot 411, $45. The two drawings, which appear to be preliminary drafts, do not appear in the published edition of Vanity Fair , though the young woman represented resembles Thackeray's depictions of Amelia Sedley (cf in particular illustrations to pp.107 and 447 of the 1848 edition).
