THACKERAY, William Makepeace (1811-1863). Vanity Fair. A Novel Without a Hero . London: Bradbury and Evans, 1848. 8° (212 x 135mm). 1-page advertisement bound in at the beginning. Steel-engraved frontispiece, title, 38 plates and numerous wood-engraved illustrations, all after Thackeray. (Some spotting to plates.) A Cosway-style binding in 20th-century dark blue morocco gilt by Bayntun (Riviere), upper cover with inset original oval portrait miniature of Thackeray, the miniature surrounded with double-fillet gilt-border, both covers with wide borders decorated with stylised sprays of roses, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with overall decoration of a scrolling rose bush, gilt turn-ins, marbled-paper endleaves, gilt edges. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, EARLY ISSUE, with 'rustic'-type heading on p.1, woodcut on p.336 and 'Mr. Pitt' on p.453. Van Duzer 231.
