The Aldine Thucydides, with scholia and History of the Emperors by Herodian Author: Thucydides Place Published: Venice Publisher: Aldus Manutius Date Published: 1502-1503 Description: 3 volumes in 1. Thucydides 1502: 124 leaves (ΑA8 ΑA-ΞO8 ΟP4. First letter of each signature is Greek, second Roman, gathered according to the Greek. With both blanks at the first ΑA8 and at ΟP4). Scholia 1503: 60 leaves (ι-μ8 ν4). Herodian 1503: 36 leaves (ξ-τ8 υ-φ6). (Folio) 30.3x20 cm (12x7¾"), early calf with blindstamp decoration laid down on modern boards, later rebacking with raised bands and morocco spine label, all edges stained red. The first printed complete text of Thucydides' Peloponnesian War in the original Greek. Regarded as one of the earliest scholarly works of history, Thucydides sets down the deeds of the famous 5th century B.C. conflict between Athens and Sparta for posterity as "a possession for ever." This copy is bound with the scholia on Thucydides, which set down in print the rich commentary tradition on the text, "without which the author is most difficult to understand," as the title (not present) suggests. Following that is a history of the Roman emperors by Herodian. Both the scholia and text of Herodian are in Greek and are taken from the 1503 Aldine publication of Xenophon, or the 1525 re-issue but bound in reverse order. The Thucydides was issued with a colophon, but without the Aldine device, however his device is present on the verso of fol. ν4, following the scholia, as issued. Occasional early annotations in one or two hands, a couple trimmed by a binder, later note on 1503 colophon. Provenance: Inscriptions to first title of G. Dodsworth, Trinity College (1740), C. Dodsworth, Sidney College, Cambridge (1772), and one additional; bookplate of Nathaniel George Clayton; Sotheby's, 1993. A true gem from the press of Aldus Manutius. Renouard 33.4, 41.7-8. PMM 102 (Estienne ed.). Condition: Light wear to old boards, occasional minor stains; slightly heavier staining and wear to Thucydides title leaf, Aldine device leaf, and first gathering ι of Herodian; near fine. Item#: 358049 Headline: Aldine Thucydides 1502, first printed Greek text
